She said she's meet me in a week so,

She was a brown haired Betty from Tennessee
who moved out to Hollywood
When she says she can do it I know she can
I know she can and could

She arrived 'round 7 or half past 8
in a Lincoln powder blue
With a loaf of bread and whiskey rye
you can have your cake and eat it too

I rolled in on the railroad line
with a handful of pork and beans
and you know me, I was right on time
lookin' hard and mean

The conductor said "Where's your ticket, boy?"
I musta left 'em in my other pair of jeans
He squinted, put his hands in his pockets
and was lookin' really mean

Well, he threw me off before I could cough,
left me by the tracks
Well, I put on my hat and grabbed my sack
You know, I didn't look back

I rolled into town about sundown
in a '64 brown coupe
I ran into Fred at the old homestead
and, you know, he gave me the scoop

He said to me "She was here, you see,
She's come, gone, and went."
So, I grabbed my stuff and took a puff
and opened up a vent

I grabbed my sack and slapped it on my back
and turned toward L.A.
I knew inside, if I caught a ride,
I could be there in three days.
